“We hope the price will increase reasonably for the rest of the season”

This year again, Bio Obsthof Münch harvested its famous full moon apples. “The conditions for the September 18 harvest were ideal: perfect weather and a clear view of the resplendent full moon brought a special atmosphere to the event. New this year is the introduction of “full moon pears” (of the Novembra variety), which we harvested for the first time at the same time as full moon apples,” explains Marco Bartels, director of the operation, on request. “We harvested 30% fewer full moon apples compared to last year. Therefore, it is likely that the availability of full moon apples will run out as early as January. »

Full moon apples are traditionally picked at night, under the glow of the full moon. They are recognized for their exceptional quality and unique aroma, and are particularly appreciated by consumers of organic products.

Early end of season
Overall, the fruit farm’s organic apple harvest is lower than last year. Bartels specifies: “The fruits were harvested and stored on time, and the quality and freshness of the products are optimal. The fruits are very tasty, regardless of the variety. For some varieties, such as Boskoop and Jonagored, the low load resulted in exceptionally large specimens. However, due to the smaller harvest, stock duration will likely be shorter this season. According to our current forecasts, our warehouses should be emptied by June at the latest. »

Satisfactory production prices
Regarding the price development, the management of the Altland family business says it is satisfied with the start of the season. “We were able to negotiate a fair price level with our customers. For the rest of the season, we hope for an increase in prices in order to remunerate producers correctly and to ensure, in the long term, sustainable production of organic fruit in Germany,” concludes Bartels.
