Floods in Spain: fake Red Cross members asking for donations, data theft with fraudulent messages, authorities sound the alarm

While the latest floods which devastated the Valencia region have left many victims behind, opportunists are trying to steal data and usurp identities via SMS, posing as the National Meteorological Agency in Spain.

The alert was given by the authorities and by the National Meteorological Agency (AEMET). As flood victims in the Valencia region of Spain attempt to clean up the damage and get back on their feet, people are taking advantage of the situation to steal data and steal identities.

To achieve this, scammers send SMS messages pretending to be the National Meteorological Agency. “A severe storm is expected in your area. Prepare yourself and stay safe. Download the APP”, can we read on the message, taken up by El Caso.

A scam which was revealed after reports. AEMET emphasizes that these are false messages since it does not send “never text.”

Our colleagues remind you that it is important not to open the link in the message, because it is fraudulent and does not allow you to open the agency’s application, but to obtain your data.

Fake Red Cross members

Another scam was uncovered by the authorities who noted the presence of people posing as members of the Red Cross and asking for cash donations.

According to the town hall of Sueca, a town in the province of Valencia, these individuals would go door to door in several towns while dressed “with red overalls”.
