Blunder and controversy for the Mattel brand: on the packaging of dolls from the film “Wicked”, a link mistakenly refers to a pornographic site instead of the official site.
As the highly anticipated “Wicked” arrives in theaters in France on December 4, 2024, the Mattel brand has launched a limited edition of dolls featuring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, who play the two main characters in the film.
And at the back of the boxes of these dolls sold in supermarkets, we find a link, “www.wicked.com”, supposed to refer to the official site, but which in reality refers to a site with limited access for under 18, clearly pornographic.
An unfortunate error, indeed, since the real URL of the official site is “www.wickedmovie.com”.
A “regrettable mistake”
It was a fan who launched the alert on Twitter, emphasizing that the products derived from the film manufactured by Lego did not have an erroneous link. Since then, this error has caused a lot of discussion on the networks.
The company Mattel indicated in a press release that it was aware of this incident: “We deeply regret this regrettable error and are taking immediate measures to remedy it. (…) Parents are advised that the erroneous and poorly printed website is not suitable for children. Consumers who already own the product are encouraged to discard the product packaging or hide the link and can contact Mattel customer service for further information.”
As a reminder, “Wicked” is the adaptation of the hit Broadway musical “Wicked”, which itself is inspired by “The Wizard of Oz”.
