There is not only Penelope in life ! The Bridgerton Chroniclesa cult Netflix series, adapted from the literary work of Julia Quinn, presents a colorful gallery of characters. A kind of Game Of Thrones during the English Regency era. Softer ass, less murder. In the season 3recently available on the famous platform, we meet a new heroine. Lady Tilley Arnold, a classy woman with a majestic aura, is the first LGBT character in The Bridgerton Chronicles, series. But does it exist in original novels ? We take stock.
Bridgertonseason 3: a new arrival makes a lasting impression
And if the real star of this third season of The Bridgerton Chronicles on Netflix wasn’t Penelope? The ingenuous young woman, with a dual identity with her acerbic pseudonym, Lady Whistledown is the flagship character of this season 3. No doubt about it. However, it must be admitted, she literally gets the spotlight stolen by another heroine. A newcomerwhat’s more, who arrives like a dog in a bowling game with the effect of an elephant in a china shop.
Her name ? Lady Tilley Arnold. A Hitchcockian blonde, classy and majestic, as magnetic as she is enigmatic, played brilliantly by Hannah New. A very symbolic surname here. Or a double of the great Jessica Lange, star ofAmerican Horror Storyin his younger years. Hannah / Lady Tilley Arnold eats up the screen in each of her appearances, encroaches on Pen’s flowerbeds, steals the spotlight from others girls of The Bridgerton Chronicles. And this for many reasons.
Lady Tilley Arnold is the first LGBT heroine of Bridgerton
In fact, Lady Tilley Arnold contrasts quite a bit with the prim landscape populated by tight asses of The Bridgerton Chronicles. IShe is the first LGBT heroine of the show, nurturing a polyamorous relationship tinged with lesbianism. A character who clashes with the times, a remote, rigid and obscure time during which thehomosexuality could be punished by death sentence. Thus, Lady Tilley Arnold serves as a true precursor in the court of the Queen Charlotte. A free spirit Oscar Wilde.
Hannah New, fan of Bridgerton basically, seen in other shows like Black Sailsis perfect in the role. We detect in her the pride of embodying such an important character, anchored both in a fictional era and in our contemporary era. Here, Lady Tilley Arnold is the “crush” of Benedict but nevertheless keeps a cool head, does not repress his polyamorous nature with sapphic tendencies. A life choice that stems from a desire for independence,empowerment and feminist freedom. But, in fact, where does Lady Tilley Arnold really come from?
Bridgerton, season 3 : Lady Tilley Arnold or the invention of Netflix
In reality, the Lady is not at all a creation from the pen of Julia Quinn. It’s an original creation from Netflix, or rather from the showrunner, Jess Brownell. It therefore does not appear in the original books of The Bridgerton Chronicles. We can easily think that this character is totally part of the progressive movement, Netflix’s editorial line, putting a little more light on invisible and invisible minorities.

It is therefore a serious choice that the series treats as such.” She adds, explaining that this type of relationship [sentimentales et amoureuses, NDLR] “has always existed”.
