As of November 5, 2024, the eco-meter installed at the top of the Puy Mary has recorded 92,000 passages since the start of the year. This figure is above the 91,000 visits in 2023. In detail, we observe a peak in attendance on May 9 with a record of 2,000 visitors who reached it.
Great momentum for site houses
This year, the site houses of the Grand Site du Puy Mary saw a sharp increase in attendance. In July, total attendance increased 19% and in August, this increase is 24% compared to 2023.
In detail, the site house at no Peyrol recorded an increase of 13% in July and 23% in August. On the Dienne side, we observed an increase of 50% in August while that of Falgoux recorded an increase of 110% in July and 14 in August.
Only that of Claux saw a drop in attendance mainly “attributed to the closure of the campsite this summer” for work.
The volcano lines which connect the municipalities of the Grand site du Puy Mary were still busy with 9,627 people transported compared to 7,295 in 2023. As a reminder, the price is €1.50 for a 2-hour journey.
2024 projects
Inauguration in the Pas de Peyrol site house: the year 2024 marked a turning point with the inauguration of the new house in June. A new approach allows visitors to explore, in a fun and dynamic way, the evolution of the site through the ages. Digital devices offer an immersion in the geological history of the massif, while bringing the richness of its natural heritage to life.
New stage in 2024 with the completion and burying work of the electrical and fiber optic networks at the Pas de Peyrol: the work should end in the coming weeks.
Development of trails. In 2024, there was a project to secure the Roland's Breach. The rehabilitation consisted of bypassing the most dangerous portion by diverting the path towards the southern slope using a historic route which has now been redeveloped. This new route is 250 m long. At Puy Violent, there are 15,000 passages. The work consisted of laying out paths with steps and wooden water bowls. The old, eroded trail has been closed.
Project 2025
With the presentation of the application for the renewal of the Grand Site de France label. As a reminder, the label was awarded in 2012 then renewed in 2018. Usually it is awarded for 6 years but now it is for 8 years. In June 2025, a departmental commission will meet and then the Ministry of Ecological Transition will visit the site. The response is expected in November or December 2025.
In this context, public meetings are planned for Wednesday November 27 at 8 p.m. in Cheylade, Tuesday December 3 at 8 p.m. in Thiézac, Thursday December 5 at 8 p.m. in Saint-Paul de Salers.
