These 3 Android features we want to see on iOS 18

With the Google I/O and WWDC 2024 conferences over, we now know the main new features coming to Android 15 and iOS 18. As is often the case, the two operating systems have many similarities. They give pride of place to artificial intelligence with the implementation of natural language queries and emphasize the protection of sensitive data.

In addition, some flagship Android features are appearing on the iPhone, such as the ability to place applications anywhere on the home screen and support for RCS messaging. Despite this, Android devices and iPhone have their own specifics. However, it would be interesting to see if Apple will adopt some of the upcoming Android features.

Here are three Android features we’d like to see on the iPhone:

Adaptive vibration

Have you ever placed your phone on a glass table or marble counter and received a phone call? The noise is enough to startle passersby and make the phone dance.

With Android 15, the adaptive vibration feature uses data from the microphone and other sensors to adjust the vibration intensity. For example, the vibration will be gentler on hard surfaces, while it will be stronger on soft surfaces like cushions. Google ensures that no data recorded for this function is retained.

Lock in case of theft

Google and Apple have built in features to secure your data in the event of theft, but the phone still needs to be locked when it happens. Biometric security and passcodes are of no use if the phone is snatched from your hand while you are using it.

That’s why Google is rolling out Theft Detection Lock, which will be available on devices running Android 10 and later. This feature uses machine learning and sensor data to detect sudden movement indicating that the phone has been taken by someone else. The phone then automatically locks as a precaution.

Return Preview

Technically, this is a modification of an already existing function. On Android, you can swipe from the left or right edge of the screen to go back or to the previous app. This is a rather effective and quick universal control. But in Android 15, this gesture is improved with the addition of an immediate preview of the application or page to which you return.
