Adjustment of fuel prices in ten communities

Starting today, fuel prices are changing for ten communities benefiting from the Ministry of Infrastructure’s Petroleum Products Program. These updates take into account the cost of fuel delivered under the 2023-2024 Winter Replenishment Program.

Home heating oil and motor fuel prices will decrease in Wekweètı̀, and gasoline prices will decrease in Jean Marie River, Nahanni Butte, Tsiigehtchic and Whatı̀. Fuel prices will increase in Colville Lake, Délı̨nę, Gametì, Nahanni Butte, Sambaa K’e and Wrigley, primarily due to increased transportation costs. Similar price adjustments apply to government customers in these communities.

The Government of the Northwest Territories is required to set retail fuel prices at amounts that cover the cost of the fuel delivered, which includes the cost of wholesale purchase and any transportation costs. Prices are adjusted at least twice per calendar year, after summer resupply by barge and after winter resupply by road, to take into account changes in the cost of petroleum products and the transportation of these products to communities. They are also adjusted periodically for other reasons, including changes to the carbon pricing program. The next price change due to the carbon tax is scheduled for April 1, 2025.

The Fuel Supply Division of the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) manages the Petroleum Products Program, which aims to purchase, transport and store bulk petroleum products for the 16 communities that are not supplied by the private sector. Ten of them receive fuel through the winter resupply program: Wekweètı̀, Colville Lake, Délı̨nę, Gametì, Jean Marie River, Nahanni Butte, Sambaa K’e, Tsiigehtchic, Whatı̀ and Wrigley.
