A year after Nahel’s death in Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine), his mother spoke on Thursday to demand justice. She will also speak out to denounce police violence during the silent march which will take place on Saturday June 29.
“I have nothing left. Why do I get up in the morning? It’s for no one. I don’t even have a reason to live anymore, I don’t want to live anymore,” confided Mounia Merzouk, the mother of Nahel, with our colleagues at RTL, in an interview published Thursday. The date of June 27, 2023 is branded in the heart of this mother who lost her only son in Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine).

That day, Nahel, 17, drove a vehicle without a license to take a friend to get his license. After refusing to comply following a police summons, he was the target of a fatal shooting by the police. The official who fired the shot was detained before being released under judicial supervision. The death of the teenager then sparked a wave of riots throughout France.

“The police make mistakes”
A release that Nahel’s mother cannot stomach: “Any mother would have difficulty accepting that. How can we accept that the murderer of our child is out there? (sic)” So she calls for justice in memory of his son. “I want there to be justice,” she insists. “I want the judges to understand that the police make mistakes. To err is human. He may have made a mistake, but he must be punished , quite simply,” insists Mounia Merzouk.

The investigation to establish what happened on the day of the tragedy continues. Expert reports were requested and a reconstruction of the facts was organized in May.
In a message posted on Instagram, she warns against harassment of young people “because they are black or Arab” and calls for mobilization against “police impunity” on Saturday, during a silent march.
