New drama on the Costa Brava. This Sunday June 15, 2024, a 65 year old man, of Spanish nationality, lost his life in the waters of Santa Margarida de Roses beach (Spain), while he was swimming. Despite an orange flag being raised at the lifeguard station due to the strong waves, the sixty-year-old ignored the alert and went for a swim. Last month, a young Frenchman aged 20 was found dead on the same beach.
An orange flag raised
The 112 emergency service was alerted at 12 p.m. by the rescuers present on site, who had already pulled the unconscious man out of the water. Despite several resuscitation maneuvers carried out by firefighters and civil guard agents, the swimmer did not survive.
Civil Protection recalled the importance of taking “extreme” precautions on beaches, swimming pools and inland waters this summer, and of taking into account signs of potential danger, in particular by displaying green, orange or red.
A Frenchman found dead
It’s the second death recorded by Catalan beaches since the start of the summer season, this Sunday, June 15. Last month, emergency services were mobilized for four days to try to find a young Frenchman, originally from Ariège, declared missing around Roses, while he had gone swimming with his friends. Only the young man’s belongings were initially found. Investigators finally found his body, May 12, 2024on the same beach where the sixty-year-old died and near a fish breeding area, stuck at 10 meters deep.
