Victim of an accident with his master, a dog acts like a hero by traveling more than 6 km to alert his family

In a press release shared on its social media accounts, the Baker County Sheriff’s Office, in Oregon (United States), returned to the rescue of a motorist and his dogs carried out on Monday June 3.

That morning, the police had just been contacted by the family of Brandon Garrettwho was very worried because he was nowhere to be found even though he was supposed to have returned to the site where they were camping the day before.

Brandon Garrett had left behind the wheel of his van accompanied by his 4 dogs and had given no further sign of life. His loved ones realized that something worrying had just happened when one of his dogs showed up at the campsite alone. The brave quadruped had just traveled 6 kilometers to alert them.

They immediately began looking for him and were able to see his wrecked van, which had fallen into the middle of a stream. On the other hand, there was no trace of the driver, nor of the 3 other dogs. The land was very difficult to access.

The sheriff Travis Ash and his deputies went to the scene, accompanied by the local search and rescue service (Baker County Search and Rescue), firefighters from Pine Valley Rural Fire District and paramedics.

All alive thanks to the hero of the day

It’s the sheriff Ash who managed to accurately determine the location of the vehicle and spotted one of the dogs. He and the rescuers then heard the distressed cries of Brandon Garrett before locating it; he was almost 100 meters from the van.

The responders were able to recover him and provide him with first aid, before transporting him to hospital by helicopter.

After the rescue, investigators knew a little more about the circumstances of the accident. Brandon Garrett had poorly negotiated a turn and his vehicle had left the road overlooking the river, ending up falling into it.

All his dogs are safe and sound, including the one to whom they owe their life.
