Last minute reservations are exploding: what are the Belgians’ favorite destinations to escape this weather?
“We keep getting rain, sleet and cold“, complains a traveler at Zaventem airport, ready to go to the sun. “There, I have a sweater, but I just can’t wait to get to Greece so I can take it off and enjoy the sun and try to bring it back to you,” smiles another.
Traditionally, June is a difficult month for travel bookings. It was expected to be even more difficult this year due to the elections and Euro football. This was without counting on the persistent bad weather which changed the situation. “Reservations keep coming in“, says Sarah Saucuin, spokesperson for TUI. “We really feel that the Belgians are more than fed up with the bad weather and want to seek out the sun.“
TUI, Belgium’s leading tour operator, notes a record increase in reservations for last minute departures. “But customers don’t necessarily have an idea of destination in mind“, explains the spokesperson.”They ask for a destination with guaranteed sunshine and unbeatable prices.“

Since the start of the month, the tour operator has recorded a 28% increase in reservations for the entire summer season and a growth of 78% for June departures, compared to last year.
According to certain tour operators, the number of last minutes between June 2023 and June 2024 increased by 50% for particularly sunny destinations.
