A police officer shot and injured a magistrate in a Nairobi court on Thursday before being shot dead in an exchange of fire with other officers, the judiciary said.
Monica Kivuti, a judge at the Makadara court, was shot and injured after rejecting the police officer’s wife’s request for bail, Winfridah Mokaya, chief judicial registrar, said in a statement.
“Immediately after the verdict, someone shot the judge,” said Winfridah Mokaya. “The police officers present on the scene reacted and neutralized the shooter.
Kivuti and three other officers who were injured in the ensuing shooting are being treated and in stable condition, Chief Justice Martha Koome said in a statement.
“It is clear that the perpetrator’s intention was to kill the magistrate,” said Ms. Koome, who ordered increased security in all the country’s courts.
The policeman’s wife had asked to be released on bail after pleading guilty to obtaining 2.9 million Kenyan shillings ($22,700) under false pretenses, according to a police report seen by Reuters.
