More than a week after a violent fatal fire in the old town of Annecy, security operations are continuing, the municipality said in a press release this Friday, November 8.

On October 30, buildings located in the city center, not far from Place Saint-François de Sales, completely burned down. Very quickly, the firefighters went to the site, but were confronted with the atypical architecture of these buildings and the rapid spread of the flames.

After a few hours, they managed to bring the fire under control. One person was discovered dead in the disaster and major damage was reported: a dozen homes were damaged and eight completely destroyed.

The same day, a security order was put in place to prohibit access to the buildings concerned and allow agents to clear the premises. “More than 17 skips of 30 cubic meters were filled and stored for (additional) analyses. The urban cleanliness services organized, for their part, the cleaning of debris that had fallen into the Thiou to avoid pollution affecting the quality of the waters”, specifies the city of Annecy.

The clearance phase must end this Friday, November 8, the security perimeter has been reduced by three meters around the burned buildings.

For the moment, the evacuees, 71 in total, still cannot return to their homes. “For the most part, they are hosted by relatives”specifies the City. “For others, places have been opened at the municipal campsite.”

In the coming days, an expert should visit the site to analyze the condition of the building structures and thus determine the measures to be taken by the owners.
