The German government affirmed on Friday that bilateral aid to Ukraine was “guaranteed”, despite the political instability linked to the fall of Olaf Scholz's coalition, which is hampering budgetary discussions. Germany is the main provider of aid to Ukraine among European Union countries, second only to the United States globally.
After the collapse of the German coalition caused on Wednesday by the dismissal of the Minister of Finance, the budget for next year, the main source of tensions within the government, can no longer be adopted this month as initially planned.
This budget provides for a volume of military aid of around four billion euros for 2025, halved compared to 2024.
Olaf Scholz now leading a minority government made up of social democrats and environmentalists, but deprived of the support of the liberals, the 2025 finance bill is in an impasse.
If it cannot be adopted due to lack of a majority in Parliament, provisional management would apply from January.
