The South African rand weakened slightly in early trading on Friday, following the dollar which returned to center stage.
At 0700 GMT, the rand was trading at 17.3650 against the dollar, down 0.2% from the previous close.
The dollar was up 0.1% against a basket of global currencies.
It’s been an eventful week on the currency markets.
The rand collapsed on Wednesday as US election results showed Donald Trump had won the presidential race, but it turned around on Thursday and closed higher than Wednesday’s market open.
With no major domestic economic data expected on Friday, the rand is expected to take a cue from offshore drivers.
Inflation-linked government bonds will be auctioned as usual on Friday by South Africa’s central bank.
The benchmark 2030 government bond was slightly stronger in early trading, with the yield down 2 basis points to 9.175%.
