The accident left around twenty people injured on Sunday evening at the Guentrange stadium in Thionville. A guardrail suddenly gave way along a large part of its length.
The final of the Moselle Win Sport School Cup for young players under 18 from TS Bertrange Imeldange against FC Coume was played late Sunday afternoon at the US Guentrange stadium in Thionville. The TS Bertrange players won by 2 goals to 1 after Coume opened the scoring. A victory displayed this Monday morning on social networks, but which was not celebrated on the field because of a terrible accident.
“The end-of-match celebrations could not take place following an incident. Several barriers in the stand gave way, several people fell and were injured. Very quickly taken care of by other supporters, and the officials, then by the firefighters and the ambulance“, report those responsible for TS Bertrange via Facebook. Before wishing a good recovery”to all the injured“.
Around 7:00 p.m. while the final was over, the guardrail which separates the stand from the football stadium suddenly gave way over several meters in length, amid a scene of jubilation in the stands, reports our colleagues from Republican Lorraine. According to the latter “twenty people, young people and a mother apparently, were injured“.
Citing the Moselle Prefecture, France Bleu Lorraine reported 14 people hospitalized with serious injuries including “a fractured tibia, a broken elbow and a partially crushed finger“. The six other supporters, taken care of by the firefighters on site, were able to return home.
Messages of solidarity towards those affected are pouring in this morning from several Moselle football clubs including the local flagship club US Thionville Lusitanos which wishes via a press release “express its most sincere support and solidarity with US Guentrange and the injured people and their families“.
Promoted to national 32 next season, US Thionville Lusitanos will play at the Guentrange stadium for home matches.
