DISTINCTION. For the 3rd year, the Prix de la Porte Dorée, from the Palais de l’histoire de l’immigration, awarded its prize, this time to Charles Berberian for An Oriental Education (Casterman). “…Charles Berberian recounts his childhood in Beirut, which he left at the age of 16. This work was made necessary because of the explosion at the Port of Beirut three years ago, on August 4 [2019]which blew away part of the neighborhood of his childhood… » we wrote in the columns of ActuaBD.com. On this occasion, he shared his memories of Beirut with Michèle Standjofski for us in a podcast. The album had already won the Wolinski/Le Point Prize in 2023.

A work that marked Marguerite Abouetpresident of the jury for the 2024 Porte Dorée BD Prize: “ Through his own memories and the reconstruction of his family history, Charles Berberian invites us to share his return to his origins, which stands out as the most intimate and universal book of all his work. It is with mastered accuracy both on the script and on the drawings that Charles Berberian manages to tell his intimate story imbued with great and delicate sensitivity and which subtly addresses deep questions of identity, cultural differences, love and childhood, restoring to them all their complexity. ” We can not agree more.
