Jean Spinette, mayor of Saint-Gilles, was attacked on Saturday morning in his town. The mayor is unhurt, indicated the Brussels Midi local police zone (Anderlecht, Saint-Gilles, Forest).

The incident occurred on the Saint-Gilles square around 10:45 a.m. when a person attacked the mayor and tried to punch him several times.

The mayor was able to avoid it and the attacker fled“, said the police. “We are looking for this person.”

I have personally experienced what the police officers in our area experience on a daily basis.“, affirms Mayor Jean Spinette. “I was at the Saturday market talking to a young family who were concerned about drug dealers in their daycare when a man came up and joined the conversation“, adds the mayor.

“I asked him to leave because he was scaring the young child and he said ‘he was the boss there’“, adds the mayor.

I was able to dodge his blows, after which he started running“, continues Jean Spinette. “I followed him to Place Jacques Franck while I called the police. There he tried to talk to people he apparently knew. The police quickly arrived on the scene, but he had already disappeared.”

According to the mayor, the man was probably a drug user and trafficker, and perhaps under the influence.
