Monster traffic jams after an accident under the Firminy tunnel

This Friday morning, traffic on the RN 88 was severely disrupted early this morning due to an accident under the Firminy tunnel, in the Le Puy/Saint-Étienne direction.

Around 8:10 a.m., a truck and two cars collided under the tunnel. Three people were involved in the accident. One of them left the scene before help arrived, while another was slightly injured and the third remained unharmed.

Traffic interrupted and diversions put in place

Following the accident, traffic was cut off in both directions at the tunnel. Diversions were put in place, quickly leading to saturation of the secondary network, in particular the crossing of Firminy. The prefecture advised motorists to avoid the area via social networks.

A dozen firefighters, accompanied by five emergency vehicles and police officers from the Rhône-Alpes Auvergne motorway CRS, were mobilized to manage the situation.

Gradual return to normal

Around 10:15 a.m., traffic was restored in the Saint-Étienne/Le Puy direction, but only one lane was open in the other direction. We had to wait about another half hour for the road to be completely cleaned and traffic to resume normally.

Incident details

The Loire firefighters intervened shortly after 8 a.m. for the accident which occurred near the junction of the A47 and the RN 88, in the direction of Le Puy-en-Velay towards Givors ( Rhône). A truck and two cars were involved, with three people affected: one having left the scene before help arrived, one slightly injured and one unhurt.

Traffic was closed in both directions by PC Osiris, and the police were tasked with regulating traffic. The authorities specified: “Traffic accident in the town of Firminy at the covered trench of the RN 88. The firefighters are on site and the RN 88 is closed. »

Thanks to rapid intervention by the authorities and emergency services, the situation was quickly brought under control, allowing motorists to return to their roads after several hours of significant disruption.
