A fire broke out Friday morning in a home in Bas-Warneton in the entity of Comines. The house was completely destroyed by flames. At the request of the mayor of Comines, local residents are invited to remain confined to their homes.

The Picardy Wallonia emergency services were alerted on Friday morning, at 8:20 a.m., that a fire had broken out in a house located at number 8 Chemin d’Alluin in the town of Bas-Warneton (Comines). Coming from the Warneton and Évregnies barracks, two pumpers, two tankers, a ladder truck and a command vehicle were sent to the site. The Walloon firefighters, under the orders of Captain Jimmy Lahousse, received reinforcements from nearby Flemish barracks. When first responders arrived, the house was already on fire and a large column of smoke was emerging from the burning building.

Very quickly, a security perimeter was set up and several access points and roads were blocked by the police. Via the “BeAlert” alert system, the mayor of Comines-Warneton, Alice Leeuwerck, invited residents to keep doors and windows closed. “Residents of Chemin d’Halluin and Bas-chemin are asked to remain confined to their homes. For residents of the city center of Comines and the rue and chemin de Warneton sector, please preventively close the doors and windows of your homes “, she said in her message.

As of 10 a.m., the fire had still not been contained. The damage is very important. Firefighters worked to protect nearby homes that were not affected by the flames. According to initial information from the firefighters, no injuries were reported.
