Two people died and “dozens” of others were injured after a collision between a passenger train and a goods convoy on Wednesday evening in Pardubice, in the central Czech Republic, the railway company Sprava Zeleznic announced.

“It is confirmed that two people were killed in the accident,” company spokesman Martin Kavka told public television. “There are dozens of people injured,” and firefighters continue to extract travelers from the carcasses of the wagons, he added.

Around 200 passengers were traveling on the express train which linked Prague to Kosice, Slovakia, Martin Kavka said.

According to the CT24 news channel, the accident occurred shortly before 9:00 p.m. GMT near Pardubice train station, about 100 km east of Prague.
