The moment had been awaited for more than three decades and did not fail to attract dozens of curious people along the roads and fields of the town of Payerne. Including the media, official guests and “aircraft spotters”, 300 people were able to witness the landing of four F/A-18s from a stand set up on the edge of the forest for the occasion.

After an hour of explanations on the objectives and reasons for this large-scale exercise led by Rolf Imoberdorf, colonel and head of the project called “Alpha Uno”, the public was able to take their place a few hundred meters from the section of motorway linking Avenches to Payerne to see the show. “I was present in 1991 during the last exercise, so automatically it means something to me to come back here,” testifies Patrick, a Swiss German spotter. I have always been fascinated by aviation during my civilian service. I got my pilot’s license after I turned 30 and now, since I no longer fly, I continue to live my passion in this way.”
