With the latest changes in the dates of the taxation of electricity prices as well as the various changes that may occur with the entry into force of texts in 2025, we are no longer confused. And yet, according to these experts, the price of energy should fall in 2025.
Electricity prices in France change every year, and 2025 will be no exception. The Energy Regulation Commission (CRE) recently announced several tariff adjustments which will come into force at the start of next year.
These changes reflect European energy trends, but also French energy policy, which seeks to reconcile price stability and energy transition.
Increase in electricity prices?
Will the electricity bill of all French people skyrocket in January 2025?
This is perhaps what some people will think in light of the announcements that have been made recently. With an increase in electricity distribution costs, the increase in VAT on energy, the increase in the Internal Tax on Final Consumption of Electricity (TICFE) known as “excise”, we could say to ourselves that it is time to warm ourselves with a candle.
Even if inflation has stopped its rampant rate, a rise in the price of energy in the middle of winter would mean a big blow to all French households.
However, according to our colleagues at Maison et Domotique, this is not the case.
A drop in prices?
This is what emerges in their recently published article. Based on information given by the Energy Regulatory Commission, the regulated energy tariff should fall by 10% in February 2025 according to Maison et Domotique.
This may be surprising, but based on the fall in energy prices this year, it could be likely that electricity will ultimately not cost as much in 2025.
But it is not certain that this will last long. Indeed, with the regulation system put in place, we should not expect a lasting drop in prices. At best, stagnation which will prevent energy prices from soaring too much.
The most vulnerable households under pressure
Low-income households, for whom the energy budget constitutes a significant part of monthly expenses, will be hardest hit. To respond to this situation, the government could consider targeted aid or an expansion of the “energy check”, which already allows several million households to benefit from financial support. This system could be adjusted to absorb part of the increases, although the amount of the check often remains insufficient to fully offset the impact of price increases.
However, at the time of the vote on the budget for 2025, all these reflections should be put on hold in view of the various exchanges between parliamentarians.
An incentive for the energy transition?
These price and tax increases could also, paradoxically, encourage households to adopt more energy-efficient practices. The French could be more encouraged to invest in energy efficiency solutions, such as home insulation or the installation of energy-efficient equipment, such as heat pumps. Subsidies and assistance for energy renovation, already in place, could play an important role in mitigating the impact of increases and encouraging the transition to more sustainable energy consumption.
In addition to rate adjustments, there are several simple and effective ways to reduce your electricity bill. Here are some tips:
- Adopt more responsible consumption: Use off-peak hours to run your washing machines, dishwashers or water heaters. This not only reduces costs, but also reduces pressure on the network during peak hours.
- Install energy-saving devices: LED bulbs, connected thermostats and low-consumption household appliances are all solutions to reduce your bill.
- Optimize insulation: By improving the thermal insulation of your home, you reduce your heating needs, which can represent a substantial saving over the year.
- Turn to renewable energies: The installation of solar panels, for example, makes it possible to produce part of its electricity, thus reducing its dependence on the network and the associated costs.
