Rescue workers had to rescue a delivery man from the Mercadona stores in Alzira at the last minute by helicopter. The distributor is under fire from criticism.
It was a miraculous rescue but one that could have been avoided. This Tuesday, as torrential rains fell on the south-east of Spain, rescuers intervened in Alzira and came to the aid of a truck delivery driver caught in the floods.
The rescue is complex and is carried out with the help of a helicopter. The man is saved after many efforts. But very quickly a controversy broke out.
Indeed, in a video shared by Spanish firefighters, we can recognize, despite the blurring, the logo of a famous Spanish supermarket chain: Mercadona. It therefore appears that this man was working while the elements were unleashed.
The company is thus accused of endangering its employees, with some accusing it of criminal behavior.
Questioned by The Olive Press, a spokesperson for Mercadona tried to justify himself, explaining “that the city was fine” when the driver left for a delivery.
“Mercadona is following the instructions of the competent authorities to ensure the safety of all its workers. By the time the delivery man went to deliver the order, the situation had returned to normal. There was a flood which, unfortunately, affected our delivery man But thanks to the emergency services, he was able to be rescued, he is fine,” he explains.
This is obviously not the only company to have put people to work during the disaster. Internet users also point to Glovo and Uber Eats, whose delivery people on scooters were seen traveling under downpours of water.
