The 16th United Nations Conference of the Parties on Biodiversity begins its last official day in Colombia on Friday. The global road map to stop the destruction of life by 2030 has been relegated to second place by the uncertainty concerning the unblocking or not of a financial standoff between the North and the South.

Contrary to the predictions on a Saturday extension of the negotiations in Cali, the Colombian president of the 16th conference assured that the final plenary would take place on Friday evening but that it promised to be “exciting”, given the number of unresolved questions .

“It's a very complex negotiation, with many interests, many parties … and that means everyone has to give up something,” said Susana Muhamad, also Colombia's environment minister.

Thursday, under alternating showers, Susana Muhamad increased the number of confidential bilateral meetings. Objective ? Finalize the compromise texts that it must present on Friday to bring together the rich and developing countries, whose positions on financial issues have been almost immutable since the opening of the summit on October 21.
