The major leagues (MLB) suspended San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano for life Tuesday for betting on baseball games.

MLB also suspended four other players for a year after determining they had placed bets, unrelated to Marcano, with a legal site.

The Venezuelan appears to be the first active major league player to be suspended under its sports betting policy since New York Giants outfielder Jimmy O’Connell in 1924.

MLB all-time hitting leader Pete Rose accepted a lifetime suspension in 1989 after an investigation determined he had bet on Cincinnati Reds games when he was their manager.

Another player, Oakland Athletics gunner Michael Kelly, was punished for a year Tuesday for betting on baseball games when he was in the minor leagues.

Minor league players Jay Groome and José Rodriguez, who belong to the Padres and Philadelphia Phillies respectively, have been suspended for one year for betting on MLB games.
