In the future, humans have achieved virtual immortality. Most of the population now has memory batteries inserted into the base of their cervical cortex that store their consciousness. A former rebel soldier named Takeshi Kovacs, the sole survivor of a group of elite warriors defeated in an uprising, is brought back to life centuries later by the richest man in the world, the vicious Laurens Bancroft. Now living in a foreign body, he must gain his freedom and to do so solve a most complicated murder… that of Brancroft himself.
Created by Laeta Kalogridis, Altered Carbon is a cyberpunk series – or rather postcyberpunk since it takes place in a “near” future – of beautiful complexity, based on the sci-fi noir novel Modified carbon by Richard K. Morgan, published in 2002 and winner of the Philip K. Dick Prize in 2004.
A true philosophical dystopia, the anticipation series – which was part of the top 10 most searched series on Google France when it was born in 2018 – explores subjects such as the separation of the soul and the body, religion, immortality, identity, torture or even class struggle.
