Liquefied natural gas: soon a call for tenders for the construction of a floating terminal in Nador West Med

Morocco will soon set a new milestone in its gas project development strategy. According to Reuters, a call for tenders will be launched this summer for the construction of a floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in the port of Nador West Med. The revelation comes from a presentation made on Friday May 31 by Abdelghafour El Hadjaoui, head of the oil and gas conventions and permits management department at the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, underlines the British agency.

This LNG terminal will be connected “to developing gas fields in the east and west» of the country, indicated the official, specifying that the department of Leila Benali “hopes to complete the financial package in 2025, for construction, commissioning and start of commercial operations planned for 2026“.

8 billion m3 of LNG needs in 2027

According to Reutersthis infrastructure will allow Morocco to better meet its LNG needs, which should reach 8 billion cubic meters (m3) in 2027, compared to one billion currently, according to estimates from the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development.

Remember that on March 26, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of the Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Equipment and Water for the establishment of a gas roadmap.

A week later, on April 2, during a presentation at the headquarters of the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM), Leila Benali announced the simultaneous launch, within the framework of this roadmap, of several points of entry dedicated to the import and storage of gas, including an LNG terminal at the port of Nador West Med and the gas pipeline that will connect it to the GME.

Two other terminals are also planned at the port of Jorf Lasfar 2 or that of Mohammedia, and at the port of Dakhla Atlantique, the terminal of which will eventually be connected to the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline.
