A major collision took place on Friday around 4 p.m. on Highway 417 near Carp Road. All lanes are currently closed westbound toward Palladium Drive.

According to information from Ottawa Fire Department Special Operations Unit spokesperson Dan Kirvan, three vehicles were involved in the accident and one of them caught fire.

He added that fire crews extricated a person from a vehicle using heavy tools.

Seven people were injured in the collision. Two three-year-old children suffered serious, life-threatening injuries. One of them was also transported by air ambulance to CHEOthe other child was transported by road.

The other five injured are adults, two of them are in critical condition and were transported to a trauma center. The third victim would suffer from serious injuries, but is said to be in stable condition. Finally, two people suffered minor injuries and were treated on scene according to Ottawa paramedics.

There PPO specifies that the highway will be closed for several hours.
