Will Toyota offer a Prime version of the Camry in the near future?

I own a 2022 Toyota Camry SE Hybrid and am considering replacing it with the new 2025 Camry SE. Do you think Toyota will launch a Prime version of the Camry in the near future?

Hello Drew,

As you probably know, the Camry is now offered in an exclusively hybrid version. Toyota chooses to emphasize this technology which meets a large North American customer base. It must be understood that the Camry is the best-selling car in the United States, and that the mere fact of only offering a hybrid version ironically constitutes a risk for the manufacturer, which does not, of course, want to lose consumers.

In the short or medium term, Toyota does not seem to want to launch a plug-in hybrid version of the Camry, although we would like it to be possible. The Japanese manufacturer prefers instead to entrust this mandate to the Prius, which is today in the same segment as that of the Camry, but which must stand out with distinct mechanical offers. Moreover, the consumption rating of the Prius with all-wheel drive is only 0.2 liters per 100 km lower than the Camry with all-wheel drive, which will undoubtedly be more popular.

Toyota will improve its plug-in hybrid vehicle offering over the years, but for the moment, there is nothing to suggest that it intends to sell such a version in Canada. Let’s not forget that with the exception of the Lexus TX550h+, no plug-in hybrid vehicle from the manufacturer is manufactured in North America. And since the Camry is assembled in the state of Kentucky, it is complicated to possibly embed such technology under its hood.
