In Oise, the inhabitants of Verberie are in shock. A 77-year-old man was killed late Saturday morning, probably using a chainsaw, according to information from Oise weekly.
On site, the consternation is particularly palpable. Retired butler, Jean-Louis Gaillet was a figure in this town of around 3,800 inhabitants, located near Compiègne.
Suspect arrested at crime scene
“Jean-Louis chaired the Verberie festival committee for a long time,” recalls a resident of Avenue René-Firmin, the main artery of the village. And he was a little political…”, confided a resident to Oise weekly. He was in fact a candidate on one of the lists during the 2020 municipal elections.
Witnesses claim that the gendarmes arrested the suspect at the scene of the crime with blood on him. The thirty-year-old then surrendered without resistance, indicating that he had killed his neighbor with a chainsaw, according to Senlis prosecutor Loïc Abrial.
The preferred path for the moment is that of madness. Several sources among investigators indicate that the suspect has psychiatric problems and is out of treatment after being hospitalized in a specialized hospital establishment. A psychiatrist also deemed his condition “incompatible with police custody”. The Senlis public prosecutor’s office therefore had him hospitalized under duress. A murder investigation has been opened.
