Between 2013 and 2024, prices of mobile and fixed plans fell by 9% for individualsdespite widespread inflation, reveals the annual study of the French Telecoms Federation (FFT) published this Wednesday.

Increase in data consumption

This drop in prices is accompanied by an increase in data consumption in 2023, the French consume on average 17 gigabytes (GB) per monthcompared to 14.3 GB the previous year.

The price per gigabyte consumed has thus mechanically fallen by 68% in between 2019 and 2023. Regarding offers intended for professionals, prices have followed a similar trajectory, with an average increase in mobile data consumption of 22% per year. year between 2018 and 2022 and an average annual price drop of 7% over the same period.

Operators' investments have continued to decline since 2021, after a period of sharp increase that began in 2015. In 2023, French operators have spent 13.8 billion euros of investments in telecom networkscompared to 14.9 billion in 2021. A level described as“exceptional” by the FFT.

Laurent Halimi, president of the federation, pointed out a “unsustainable economic situation” due to low prices and investments, “in a context of accelerating digital transition and strong tax and regulatory pressure”.

France also experienced a increase in fiber subscriberswith 3 million more subscribers between 2022 and 2023. The total subscribers thus increased to 21 million, for 26 million eligible households.
