Residents of Bayonne, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, face a flood of the Nive on Friday October 18, after heavy rain and a high tidal coefficient.

In Bayonne (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), residents are used to seeing the Nive overflow. But at 6 p.m., Friday October 18, the flood is rapid and seems more significant. Faced with the mayor of Bayonne, a restaurateur confides his surprise. He is due to open his establishment soon. “I saw with the local restaurant owners, they told me ‘in ten years, it’s never reached our house’, today it’s happened”he notes.

In the streets of the old town, residents are cautious when entering or leaving their homes. Local residents are adapting. The combination of heavy rain and a high tidal coefficient threatens the ground floor of a house. “I’m going to barricade myself and try to save what I can.”explains its owner. Friday evening, the peak of the flood has passed, but the authorities are still calling for vigilance for Saturday, October 19 in the morning.
