The legal sequence accelerates in the tragic death of a cyclist in . Three days after the death of Paul Varry, 27, run over by a motorist, the suspect was placed in pre-trial detention on Friday after being indicted for murder.

The 52-year-old suspect was arrested shortly after the tragedy and taken into police custody. He would have deliberately run over the young man from Saint-Ouen (Seine-Saint-Denis) with his SUV, at the end of a road altercation according to several testimonies and the use of video surveillance, reported the Paris prosecutor’s office.

The tragedy unfolded late Tuesday afternoon near the Madeleine church in the 8th arrondissement of the capital.

Known for acts of fraud and violence

According to “Le Parisien”, the driver supported the theory of the fatal accident while in police custody, blaming the cyclist, who behaved like “a madman” and would have “hit like a madman” on the hood of his car. The fifty-year-old also claims to have only tried to “flee”, “terrorized” by the “hatred” of his interlocutor.

According to his statements, the suspect was taking his 17-year-old daughter to the ophthalmologist during the tragedy. Being late, he decided to take the cycle path to save time.
