“An event not to be missed because it will not return for thousands of years”: a phenomenon visible to the naked eye in the Belgian sky this Saturday

After making its show thanks to its long cometary tail in the Southern Hemisphere, the comet is passing into the Northern Hemisphere. Its orbit currently takes it between the Earth and the Sun, which makes it particularly bright. In recent days, given its proximity to our star, the comet was not observable. But over the next few days, it will emerge from the Sun’s glow and climb higher and higher in the sky – and also fade rapidly as it moves away from the Sun.

A strange “ball of fire” in the sky seen on the Belgian border: here is what we know (VIDEOS)

This October 12, the comet will be closest to Earth but still very low on the horizon, only 10 degrees at sunset. “But it could become visible to the naked eye and especially to binoculars if the sky is clear in the west direction.further specifies Emmanuel Jehin. As the comet will be very low on the horizon, it is important to choose your observation spot carefully to have a perfectly clear view of the southwest horizon. To do this, locate where the Sun sets as soon as possible and of course stay away from the light pollution of cities as much as possible. I strongly advise observing with binoculars and contacting astronomy clubs near you to try to observe the comet through a telescope.”
