Cutaneous melanomas have a good prognosis if detected early. A late diagnosis, on the other hand, reduces the chances of cure because this aggressive cancer has a high metastatic potential. Basal cell carcinomas, which are extremely common (70% of skin cancers) and squamous cell carcinomas (15%), generally pose few problems and are primarily treated in primary care. “The arrival of immunotherapy in 2011 changed the situation. Previously, metastatic melanomas killed people in less than a year. Today, thanks to this treatment which stimulates the lymphocytes and helps them to better destroy the tumor, we obtain very long remissions. We sometimes dare to speak of healing,” underlines Professor Caroline Robert, head of the onco-dermatology department at Gustave Roussy.
