Orange warning for rain-floods in the Alpes-Maritimes: what awaits us in the coming hours

The Alpes-Maritimes switched to vigilance for rain-floods and high waters this Wednesday, October 9. The rain-flood watch is activated this evening at 6 p.m. and is expected to last until 3 a.m. tonight.

An orange alert for floods is also in place. Here’s what awaits us in the coming hours.

Up to 130mm “occasionally”

In the department from this late afternoon until the end of next night, Météo forecasts regular and temporarily moderate to heavy rain. They should mainly affect “the first foothills and the relief”. The coastal zone will be affected but to a lesser extent.

During this episode of rain, accumulations of around 40 to 60 mm are expected on the foothills and the relief. Be careful, however, we can reach between 80 and 100mm in places, or even 120-130mm “punctually”. Météo France also specifies that we will have to be very vigilant because this rain could temporarily reach intensities of around 20 to 30 mm/h, or even 40 mm/h, and be stormy.

Coastal areas should be less affected by this heavy rain. In particular, we expect accumulations of around 10 to 30 mm in these areas. Panointed with vigilance all the same, the coastline may be affected by runoff from the rains which will hit the reliefs.

For flood vigilance, it is mainly the middle which will be affected by this measure: namely Broc, Sigale, Saint-Sauveur-de-Tinée, Tournefort Vieux Pont and even Utelle.
