Cvery year, psychiatry and medicine circles take stock of mental health in the world. What progress? What challenges? What new support techniques? What care and support? What philosophy should we adopt to help those who suffer to get better and stay that way? In Morocco, as elsewhere, professionals in the sector know the real situation of mental health and also know everything that remains to be done in a country where a large number of our fellow citizens suffer from numerous psychiatric illnesses and associated pathologies.
Lack of specialized doctors in the face of the growing number of patients, lack of dedicated care units, with all the equipment that support worthy of the name implies, glaring lack of resources, which limits access to care, especially among more deprived, and there are many of them, lack and absence of psychiatric units in several regions of Morocco, lack of communication on mental illnesses, systematic stigmatization, dangerous proliferation of drugs in Morocco, serious addictions, increasingly recurrent suicide attempts , narcotics in Moroccan schools, family violence, urban violence, continuous stress, social pressures, anxiety and long-term anxiety, the manifestations of poor mental health in Morocco are numerous and complex. The absolute urgency is to address mental health as one of the highest health priorities in our country.
However, despite the clarity of the situation, despite field observations which show the extent to which we must react urgently, mental health is lagging behind in Morocco, suffering from several ills and above all from a certain fatalism, which leaves the door open to all charlataneries and other bad maraboutisms, at a time when Morocco is negotiating an important shift for its future in need of a population and youth in very good physical and especially mental and moral health.
