Civil Protection services recorded 762 deaths and 31,705 injuries in road accidents that occurred during the past summer season, said Tuesday in Algiers, Deputy Director of Information and Statistics, Commander Nassim Bernaoui. .

During a joint press conference between Civil Protection (PC), the National Gendarmerie (GN), National Security and the forestry services, on the results of the activities of the 2024 summer season, Mr. Bernaoui announced that the PC “recorded 534,720 interventions including 43,530 in the context of road accidents”, reporting “762 deaths and 31,705 injured in road accidents occurring in the period from June 1 to September 30, 2024”.

He specified that “the highest number of accidents was recorded in August with 7,080 resulting in 209 deaths”.

Concerning cases of drowning, the PC services recorded during the same period “214 deaths including 131 by drowning in beaches prohibited for swimming”, adds the same official. As for bodies of water, “86 deaths were recorded compared to 73 in 2023,” continues the same speaker who also reported “2,111 fires occurring on farms and fruit trees.”

For his part, the head of the prevention and public security department at the GN command, Colonel Nadjmeddine Chemak, announced the results of the interventions of the GN services in his territory of competence during the summer season, notably “the seizure of 52,395 psychotropic tablets, 1,857 kg of processed cannabis, 3,611 g of cocaine and 25,575 units of alcoholic beverages”.

As for the fight against the illegal exploitation of beaches, car parks and campsites, “the same services arrested 296 individuals, 3 of whom were placed in detention, in 304 cases handled relating to the illegal exploitation of beaches, 309 cases relating to the illegal operation of car parks and 58 other cases relating to the illegal operation of campsites”.

At the same time, the chief police commissioner, Rabah Zouaoui presented the results of the activities of the security services during the summer season, marked in particular by the seizure of “319,418 psychotropic tablets and quantities of different types of drugs, in addition to , counterfeit national and foreign currency notes, Smartphones, precious metals and sensitive equipment, during control operations at ports, airports and land border crossings.

For his part, the deputy director at the General Directorate of Forests (DGF), Saïd Fritas, revealed “the recording of 666 fires between May 1 and October 7, 2024, having affected forests and fruit trees in the mountains, on 3,314 hectares”, noting “the decline” in the number of fires compared to last year.
