The pre-match
Union Saint-Gilloise and Antwerp will face each other on Thursday in the final of the 69th edition of the Belgian Cup at the King Baudouin stadium. For the Great Old, the objective is to sign a double after the 2023 final won against Mechelen (0-2) while the people of Brussels will try to lift their first Cup since 1914.
This season, the two teams battled on three different fronts with the championship, the Cup but also European competitions. Antwerp, reigning champion, is out of the race for the coronation and remains in a disappointing season in the Champions League after finishing last in its group behind FC Barcelona, FC Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk.
In the Cup, Mark van Bommel’s men took out Oud-Heverlee Louvain in the quarter-finals (2-3) before taking out Ostend (1-1, 3-0).
On the Union side, the 2023-2024 season was more prolific. With a third place in Group E of the Europa League behind Liverpool and Toulouse, USG was transferred to the Conference League where it beat Eintracht Frankfurt in the play-offs (2-2, 2-1) before losing in the round of 16 against Fenerbahçe (0-3, 1-0).
In the championship, Alexander Blessin’s troops paraded at the top of the rankings during a majority of the classic phase. After a complicated start to the playoffs, the Brussels residents are battling with Anderlecht and Club Brugge.
In the Cup, the Union won the Brussels derby against RSCA in the quarter-finals and then took on the Blauw en Zwart in the semi-final (2-1, 2-0).
By beating Antwerp, Union Saint-Gilloise could lift the third Belgian Cup in its history, the first since the 1913-1914 double. On the Great Old side, a victory would mean a fifth trophy and could save the season while offering a double after the 2023 coronation.
