Challenged to straighten out the accounts in the budget he will present next week, Prime Minister Michel Barnier “must build the solution” in a “dialogue with parliamentary groups”said Emmanuel Macron on Saturday. The government must present its draft budget for 2025 on Thursday, supposed to include 40 billion euros in savings and 20 billion in tax increases to reduce the public deficit from 6% to 5% of GDP.

Questioned on this subject during a press conference at the conclusion of the Francophonie summit, Mr. Macron did not wish “comment on government work”. But the head of state still stressed that“it is up to the Prime Minister to conduct the business of government and to do it in dialogue with the parliamentary groups”. Groups “where it seems to me that there are managers with whom he must build the solution, and who have a fairly clear vision of management and public affairs and the budget of recent months and recent years”he added.

Way of evoking, without mentioning them, the ex-Prime Minister Gabriel Attal (now at the head of the Macronist EPR group) and the ex-minister Gérald Darmanin (passed by Bercy before the Interior), who demonstrated the latter days their opposition to the tax increases envisaged by Mr. Barnier.
