This is very bad news that smokers will have to face in a few months. Indeed, it was announced that the price of a packet of cigarettes as well as that of rolling tobacco would experience a significant new increase.
Cigarette smokers take note: tobacco may soon become a luxury in France. We must always know that as part of its fight against tobacco, France has become the second country in Europe where the prices of packets of cigarettes or even hand-rolling tobacco have become the highest after Ireland. If there are still more than 12 million smokers in the country, they will unfortunately have to expect a further increase in the price of their usual pack of cigarettes or rolling tobacco from the start of 2025.

While some members of the government want the pack of cigarettes to reach 25 euros by 2040, the numerous increases in recent months do not bode well. While in 2014 a pack of cigarettes cost only 7 euros, in less than a decade its price has practically doubled, reaching an average of 11.50 euros. The consequences of the anti-tobacco policy carried out by the French government in recent years which is not ready to stop since two new increases are already planned, the first of which is from 2025.

The price of tobacco has already exploded in 2024
The year 2024 has been particularly harsh for smokers. Indeed, during this period, they had to face two consecutive increases. The first in January 2024, an increase of almost one euro for certain brands which had been particularly harsh since certain packages had seen their price exceed the 12 euro mark. The second came a few months later when cigarette packs once again cost between 50 and 75 cents more depending on the brand.
Two increases which will therefore be followed by a new one from 2025. Planned as part of the Social Security financing bill aimed at dissuading consumption and reducing expenses linked to diseases caused by smoking, this new increase risks weigh heavily on the wallets of regular consumers. An increase which does not only concern cigarette packs, but also other tobacco products such as roll-your-own cigarettes and cigars.

The pack of cigarettes will exceed 12 euros from 2025
According to initial estimates, the rise in tobacco prices should increase the average price of a pack of cigarettes to around 12 euros by 2025. If currently the average price is around 11.50 euros even if certain brands have already reached 12 euros, this symbolic bar should be reached by a large majority of cigarette brands on the French market from January 1, 2025. The most popular brands like Marlboro should reach 13 euros per pack of 20 cigarettes!
