British actor Bernard Hill died at the age of 79 this Sunday, according to his representative at the BBC. Known for his roles in “Titanic” and “The Lord of the Rings,” Hill also made an impact with his portrayal of Captain Edward Smith in the film about the liner tragedy and as King Théoden in Tolkien’s epic trilogy.

Notable performances include his role as Yosser Hughes in “Boys from the Blackstuff,” an ’80s TV show where he played a character facing adversity.

Born in Blackley, northern England, on December 17, 1944, Hill was raised in a Catholic mining family. From a young age he turned his attention to drama, studying at the Manchester Polytechnic of Drama.

Notable contributions

Aside from his iconic film roles, Hill also played Sergeant Putnam in the 1982 film “Gandhi,” directed by Richard Attenborough. He also played small roles in various television drama programs, such as “I, Claudius” in 1976.

His other work includes his portrayal of Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk, in the BBC’s six-part adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s novel, “Wolf Hall.”
