“It saddens me”, Eric Roy responds to those who do not want to see Brest in the Champions League

Author of a remarkable season, Stade Brestois is facing criticism concerning a possible participation in the Champions League next season. Invited during the Intégrale Sport this Sunday on RMC, Eric Roy wanted to answer it.

Stade Brestois, 3rd in Ligue 1, is officially guaranteed to play in a European Cup next season. It remains to be seen which one between the Champions League and the Europa League. Whatever happens, this season will be historic for the Breton club which has never known better than an 8th place in D1, obtained in 1987.

“The others are not there but that’s not my problem”

Guest of Intégrale Sport, this Sunday, on RMC, the day after the draw conceded against FC Nantes (0-0), Eric Roy returned to the criticism regarding a possible participation of Stade Brestois in the Champions League the next season: “It saddens me. If we are here it is because I think we deserve it. People say that it is a weak championship and that the others are not there but that is not It’s not my problem. It’s disappointing and a little sad.”

Expected to be in the top places in the ranking at the start of the season, Lyon, Marseille and Rennes generally missed their season and all had to change coaches during this financial year. They now hope to reach Europe.

If Brest manages to qualify for the Champions League, the club coached by Eric Roy will not be the only “surprise guest” in C1 next season. Indeed, Girona validated its ticket for the Champions League this Saturday with a success against FC Barcelona. A member club of the City Group, the Gironistes have been playing in La Liga since 2022 after a first brief stint from 2017 to 2019.

To a lesser extent, Bologna FC, coached by Thiago Motta, is also very close to returning to the Champions League, 59 years after the Italian club’s only participation.

The upcoming schedule is favorable for Stade Brestois to hope to secure direct qualification for the Champions League. The Bretons will challenge Stade de Reims (Friday May 10) for the last match of the season at Francis-Le-Blé before traveling to Toulouse to end a season which is already historic.
