the essential
Next week will be light for the students. They will only have classes for two days. What do students and their parents risk if they are tempted to skip school?

The coming week is going to be cool for the 12 million students. Class Monday and Tuesday. That’s all. Wednesday will be a holiday. It is May 8 in memory of the end of the Second World War. The next day will be Ascension Thursday. And on Friday no student will have classes, throughout France, to allow for a bridge attached to the weekend. That’s 5 days of rest.

The temptation can then be great for some parents to take advantage of another week of vacation in the sun – provided they can take days off and have the financial means to leave – and make their child(ren) miss school. child(ren) on Monday and Tuesday. Especially since we will not see May 8 and Ascension again in the calendar before 2043.

Legitimate reasons for absence

However, the rules are clear in the Education Code. The only legitimate reasons for absence are: the child’s illness, a communicable or contagious illness of a family member, a solemn family reunion, an impediment resulting from accidental difficulty in communications and a temporary absence of persons responsible when children follow them. Exceptional vacations are not one of them. In all cases, your child’s school must be informed of their absence.

In the event of absence without legitimate reason or valid excuses for at least four half-days in the month, the director of the educational establishment must report the absence to his or her hierarchy.

But there are texts and there is reality. “No one will be sanctioned. No head of establishment will make a report for two days,” predicts a teacher from Normandy in West France. “Those who are absent may receive a message on Pronote*. And that’s it.”

* Pronote is school life management software used in more than 10,000 middle and high schools in France.
