The surge in gold prices
At the end of 2018, the value of the gold stock carefully kept by the Banque de France at its headquarters in Paris was 87.8 billion euros. A theoretical value which has more than doubled in the space of six years. This stock of gold is kept in the form of a 12.5 kg bar. France thus holds no less than 194,960 of these bars. The market value of a 12.5 kg bar of gold is €947,375, which leads to the establishment of a financial guarantee, in gold equivalent, of €184,700,230,000.

Gold stockpile, 27 meters underground
To guarantee the security of the national gold reserve, the stored bars are buried 27 meters deep, in a safe located under the headquarters of the Banque de France in Paris. In total, the underground room measures more than 10,000 square meters. This place, aptly called La Souterraine, was built between 1924 and 1927. Since that date, France’s gold reserves have been stored there.
