Bug prevents users from sharing videos on WhatsApp

A bug that annoys usersIs there a solution to the problem?

Given the popularity of WhatsApp, any outage or problem with this service can affect more than a billion users around the world. In addition to staying in touch with loved ones, many users use the app to exchange photos, videos, and other media files.

However, a new bug in WhatsApp is preventing some users from sharing videos with other people on the platform. This issue appears to only affect some WhatsApp users on Android, as no iPhone owners have reported a similar issue.

A bug that annoys users

WhatsApp users on Android are increasingly reporting problems when trying to share videos on the platform, according to discussions on X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit. When they try to send a locally stored video, an error message appears stating: “This video could not be sent.”

Choose another video and try again. » Even when disabling HEVC/H.265 recording and HDR recording, the issue still persists for these users. So this bug seems to be more complex than a simple video format compatibility issue. WhatsApp has yet to provide an official solution for this issue, but it’s likely that engineers are already working on a fix. In the meantime, affected users will have to use alternative methods to share videos.

Since Sunday evening, I have been receiving an error message on my phones, a Xiaomi 14 Ultra and a Pixel 8 Pro, when I try to send videos stored locally or downloaded from Google Photos via WhatsApp. The message says: “This video could not be sent. Choose another video and try again. » However, my wife was able to share the same video without problem on her phone and via Google Photos.

This bug doesn’t seem to affect everyone. My colleague Chethan and I haven’t been able to share videos since yesterday, but Chandraveer, another team member, didn’t have this problem. Sources like 9to5Google are also reporting difficulties sharing videos on WhatsApp over the past 24 hours.

Is there a solution to the problem?

The issue appears to affect the latest stable and beta versions of WhatsApp for Android. Users report that WhatsApp Business does not seem affected by this issue. The bug appears to be limited to video sharing, as affected users can still share photos and other media files without difficulty.

It is likely that a bug in the latest version of WhatsApp is causing the problem. Even when trying to send yourself videos through the platform, you might receive the same error message. Videos recorded directly via WhatsApp are also affected.

WhatsApp

If this WhatsApp bug affects your daily usage, you can try downgrading the app to an earlier version. To do this, download the APK of an older version from APKMirror and install it manually. Otherwise, you will have to wait until Meta releases a patch, which should not take long given the great popularity of WhatsApp.
