Catherine Deneuve to preside over the 50th César Awards: a tribute to an icon of French cinema

French cinema icon Catherine Deneuve has been chosen to preside over the 50th César Awards ceremony, which will be held on February 28 at the Olympia in , organizers have announced.

On the occasion of this significant anniversary, the Académie des César and Canal+ stated in a joint press release that “Who better than an extraordinary actress to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Césars?”Catherine Deneuve thus succeeds Valérie Lemercier, who held this honorary role last year.

An exceptional career

With over 140 films to her credit, Catherine Deneuve, 80, is a key figure in French cinema. She has left her mark on the seventh art by collaborating with renowned directors such as Jacques Demy, Luis Buñuel, François Truffaut, but also André Téchiné, Lars Von Trier and François Ozon. Despite a stroke in 2019, which forced her to take a break of a few months, the actress quickly returned to the sets.

Recently, she shared the bill with her daughter Chiara Mastroianni in “Marcello Mio”, a film by Christophe Honoré presented in competition at the Film Festival. This ongoing commitment illustrates Catherine Deneuve’s intact passion for cinema.

The Césars, an institution of French cinema

Created in 1975, the César ceremony rewards the best of French cinema each year. The first edition was held in April 1976 and, since 1994, it has been broadcast in the clear by Canal+.
