It will soon be possible to make calls from space and even watch Netflix thanks to equipment manufacturer Nokia and the American space agency.

Initially planned for 2022, the project was a few years late and will be deployed on the surface of the moon this year. According to the American media CNN, the 4G network will be located at the South Pole of the moon and transported by a Space X rocket.

A major challenge to withstand space conditions, because with high temperatures and radiation, “the equipment had to meet size, weight and power requirements, and which could be deployed without the help of a technician,” said Walt Engelund, the deputy associate administrator for programs in NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate.

This system will thus ensure communications on the surface of the Moon over greater distances, reliably and at high speed.

It is also about improving the comfort of astronauts who will be able to contact their families and access their applications from the satellite.

An essential device for the Artemis program which, in 2026, plans to send astronauts to the Moon.
