Heavy rains and floods paralyze Nairobi, death toll rises in Kenya

Floods in Nairobi: Residents face the consequences of torrential rains

Residents of Nairobi were on Wednesday facing the consequences of floods which submerged their homes and caused significant property damage, following a night of torrential rains.

Vehicles remained stranded on Sunday in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, as the toll of heavy rains and floods continues to rise. Since mid-March, 35 people have died in floods that have affected more than 100,000 people, according to the United Nations, which cites Red Cross figures in its latest update.
Flooding was reported in residential areas of Nairobi as rivers overflowed on Sunday evening.

Motorists were seen driving and wading through waters that engulfed the city. Kenya’s government agency responsible for roads has warned Nairobi residents to avoid flooded highways, including the one leading to the coastal city of Mombasa.

People living along the Nairobi River are being urged to relocate to higher ground.

At least 40,265 people have been displaced in 21 of the country’s 47 counties. Flooding and mudslides were also reported in western Kenya. In the northern region, a passenger bus was swept away by floodwaters on a bridge in early April, and 51 passengers were rescued.

The Kenya Meteorological Service predicts that rainfall will peak this week.
